A history of the biogeography of Amazonian fishes Neotropical Ichthyology
Dagosta,Fernando C. P.; Pinna,Mário C. C. de.
ABSTRACT The history of knowledge about Amazonian biogeography is as rich as its fish community, and a fascinating theme of study in itself. Several current paradigms and controversies about Amazonian fish biogeography are rooted in principles dating from the second half of the 18th to the first half of the 19th centuries. The present work establishes a relationship between current biogeographical ideas and their old predecessors, on the basis of a chronologically-oriented historical continuity analysis. The advent of evolutionary theory has not contributed significantly to a transformation of the knowledge on the biogeography of Amazonian fishes. On the other hand, the two main schools of biogeographical thought (dispersalist and vicariant) had major...

Aspectos Ecológicos y Biológicos de la Familia Gerreidae (Teleostei: Percoidei) en el Estero El Conchalito, La Paz, B.C.S., México OceanDocs
Ramos Lozano, L. J..

Freshwater fishes of the Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses and adjacent areas Biota Neotropica
Brito,Pâmella Silva de; Guimarães,Erick Cristofore; Ferreira,Beldo Rywllon Abreu; Ottoni,Felipe Polivanov; Piorski,Nivaldo Magalhães.
Abstract: We present here an embracing freshwater fish inventory of the Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses and adjacent areas, reporting 49 fish species, 33 of which were identified accurately at the species level, representing ten orders and 25 fish families that range from obligate freshwater to estuarine organisms. This number of species is much larger than two previous studies for the park, each reporting just 12 and 33 fishes occurring on freshwater environments. Among the 49 freshwater species recorded in this study, 14 are new records for the Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses, and just one corresponds to an introduced species. Some of the 14 new records in the Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses, cited above, as well as some of the 16...

Ichthyofauna of headwater streams from the rio Ribeira de Iguape basin, at the boundaries of the Ponta Grossa Arch, Paraná, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Frota,Augusto; Message,Hugo José; Oliveira,Rachel Calil de; Benedito,Evanilde; Graça,Weferson Júnio da.
Abstract: The rio Ribeira de Iguape basin (Paraná State) is highly relevant for the preservation of remnants of the Atlantic Forest. Its high levels of diversity and fish endemism explain the river dynamics promoted by the Ponta Grossa Arch, a geological structure that promotes headwater capture and isolation between the upper rio Paraná drainage, the rio Iguaçu and the rio Ribeira de Iguape. Here, our objective was to provide an unprecedented inventory for headwater streams of the rio Ribeira de Iguape basin at the boundaries of the Ponta Grossa Arch. We found 29 species of fish representing four orders and nine families. Siluriformes was the richest order followed by Characiformes. Nine species presented high abundance of sampled individuals,...

Ichthyofauna of the Ribeirão Frutal and tributaries, upper Rio Paraná basin, Minas Gerais, Southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Azevedo-Santos,Valter M.; Coelho,Paula N.; Deprá,Gabriel de Carvalho.
Abstract: The Ribeirão Frutal basin is located within the upper Rio Paraná system, in the Frutal municipality, Minas Gerais State, Southeastern Brazil. Until now, there was no complete ichthyological survey published for this small basin. Therefore, here we provided a list of fish species from the Ribeirão Frutal and some of its tributaries. We found 31 species of fishes representing five orders and ten families. We identify a likely undescribed and five non-native species in the Frutal basin. Lastly, we recommend new surveys of fishes in small hydrographic basins within upper Rio Paraná system.

Impact des facteurs anthropiques et naturels sur le fonctionnement de quelques populations halieutiques ArchiMer
Prouzet, Patrick.
Researcher since 1974 at CNEXO (National Centre for Exploration of the Oceans), then at IFREMER (French Institute for Exploitation of the Sea), I have at the same time brought to the work of researching the dynamics of exploited ichthyologic populations actions for enhanced improvement and transfer of knowledge to help managers and stakeholders administer these resources and restore them if needed. This activity led me to play a double role: that of the expert who is asked to set up "a truth judgment" on a given subject or according to a specific question, and that of the scientist faced with the judgment of his peers who strives not to go against his knowledge (i.e., that which is subject to the criticism of the scientific community). This change of...

Monophyly of Heterandriini (Teleostei: Poeciliidae) revisited: a critical review of the data Neotropical Ichthyology
Morales-Cazan,Alfy; Albert,James S..
The systematics and taxonomy of poeciliid fishes (guppies and allies) remain poorly understood despite the relative importance of these species as model systems in the biological sciences. This study focuses on testing the monophyly of the nominal poeciliine tribe Heterandriini and the genus Heterandria, through examination of the morphological characters on which the current classification is based. These characters include aspects of body shape (morphometrics), scale and fin-ray counts (meristics), pigmentation, the cephalic laterosensory system, and osteological features of the neurocranium, oral jaws and suspensorium, branchial basket, pectoral girdle, and the gonopodium and its supports. A Maximum Parsimony analysis was conducted of 150 characters...

Souza,Gabriel Raposo Silva de; Gadig,Otto Bismark Fazzano; Motta,Fabio dos Santos; Moura,Rodrigo Leão de; Francini-Filho,Ronaldo Bastos; Garrone-Neto,Domingos.
Abstract This paper presents a checklist of the reef fish fauna of the Anchieta Island State Park, a no-take zone in which no extractive activities are allowed, in Ubatuba, Southeastern Brazil. Data was obtained between 2011 and 2013, mainly through underwater observations with snorkelling and SCUBA, and secondarily using scientific fishing (trawling). Published and unpublished data were also verified and compiled. A total of 103 reef fish species, distributed in 78 genus and 50 families was recorded. Haemulidae was the richest family (n=7 species), followed by Epinephelidae (n=6), Pomacentridae, Carangidae and Tetraodontidae (n= 4 each). Haemulon was also the most speciose genera (n=5), followed by Stegastes, Acanthurus and Mycteroperca (n=3 each)....

Sistemática, biología y ecología del Titi Sicydium antillarum Grant (Pisces: Gobiidae) en la región de Santa Marta, Colombia OceanDocs
Silva-Melo, L.; Acero-P., A..

The Chaenopsine blennies of the Southwestern Caribbean (Pisces: Clinidae: Chaenopsinae) I. Systematic analysis of zoogeography OceanDocs
Acero-P., A..
The chaenopsine blennies are an homogeneous group which may be considered a subfamily of the Clinidae, since the existing evidence is not enough to give them familial status. The subfamily includes eight genera: Mccoskerichthys, Coralliozetus, Acanthemblemaria, Ekemblemaria, Emblemaria, Hemiemblemaria, Lucayablennius, and Chaenopsis. The nominal genera Protemblemaria and Emblemariopsis are herewith considered synonyms of Coralliozetus, since they share two derived characters: small size and sexual dimorphism in the color of the head, and are rather similar in several other characteristics. The división of the West Indian Zoogeographical Province made by Briggs (1974) is unnatural, since the fish fauna of Belize, Florida and the Bahamas is very similar. I...
